Since 2014, the project series MUR BRUT has transformed a white-painted wall in the parking garage of Kunsthalle Düsseldorf into a dynamic surface for quarterly-changing art projects. Within this unique, site-specific setting, Nadine Karl presents a work that continues to explore perception, identity, and environmental consciousness.
From the flickering light of the concrete-grey space emerges a creature, neither entirely human nor wholly other, revealing a mythological world that invites viewers to reflect on their own bodies, vulnerability, and relationship to the environment. The installation opens a subtle space of transformation and uncertainty, where perception becomes a physical, fleeting, and immersive experience.
This approach builds on themes Karl began in her first solo exhibition at Galerie 3AP in Frankfurt, which was strongly informed by her experiences in the Atacama Desert earlier this year. She now extends these investigations across multiple sites, integrating folded photography on metal as shifting realities, as well as text, video performance, sculpture, and sand, creating a dialogue between her gallery practice and the public, site-specific format of MUR BRUT at Kunsthalle Düsseldorf.
