Julie Mia participating in the 3rd International Sculpture Symposium

Julie Mia’s interdisciplinary practice—spanning sculpture, painting, photography, and installation—explores transformation and translation across analog and digital realms, the functional and symbolic, the concrete and abstract. Her works often begin with everyday objects, fragments of text, or digital screenshots, which she manipulates to strip them of their original function, rendering them „inoperative.“ In sculptural terms, her work has spanned a broad array of casting techniques—bronze, wax—as well as 3D printing processes utilizing sand, resin, and PETG. A knife cast in sand or a spoon made of wax becomes speculative, resisting classification and inviting poetic interpretation.
The myth of Sisyphus, as interpreted by Albert Camus in The Myth of Sisyphus, articulates the existential condition of absurdity—the tension between humanity’s search for meaning and the fundamental meaninglessness of the world. Within this framework, the relentless repetition of processes and continuous re-engagement with beginnings in Julie Mia’s artistic practice can be seen as an aesthetic reflection of the absurd. The symposium in the historic hall marks a pivotal moment in her practice, offering the opportunity to approach steel as a new medium.
