For DC Open, the gallery presents new works by Nadine Karl, following her recent exhibition at Simultanhalle Cologne and her solo presentation Epiphenomenon at Galerie 3AP in Frankfurt.

»Intimate Complicity – An Arid Shimmer« develops Nadine Karl’s engagement with Édouard Glissant’s concept of archipelagic thinking. Through light, photographic objects and olfactory elements, Karl explores landscape as a space of experience and relation, where different temporalities and forms of life intersect. Arid shimmer, in the sense of Édouard Glissant, describes the oscillating nature of encounters and identities beyond fixed boundaries. At the centre are concave and convex monochrome-printed aluminium works whose surfaces set image, light and reflection into continual movement. Photographs of the Atacama Desert enter into dialogue with photographs of the Himmelgeister Rheinbogen nature reserve, bringing two geographically and ecologically distinct landscapes into relation. Karl continues her exploration of memory, landscape and ecological relationships, as well as her search for an expanded understanding of materiality. The works shift the gaze from landscape as an object of representation towards a complex field of relations in which human and more-than-human actors are interconnected. The exhibition forms another node within a practice in which motifs, materials and forms of perception recur across different bodies of work, shifting and entering into new configurations. Landscape thus becomes a site in which the present condition of ecological transformation is inscribed. The new works build on Karl’s recent presentation at Simultanhalle Cologne as part of WITTERN , as well as her solo exhibition Epiphenomenon in Frankfurt, further developing central questions within her practice in a new spatial configuration.

Nadine Karl (*1990) is a Düsseldorf-based artist working across installation, sculpture, and photography. Her practice brings together memory, temporality, and fiction into spatial constructions expanded through sound, smell, and tactile elements. At its core lies an ecofeminist perspective on the relationships between bodies, environments, and more-than-human agents. Before her studies, Karl worked as a theatrical sculptor, developing a strong sensitivity toward material and spatial dramaturgy. She studied at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf with Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster and Gregor Schneider (2019–24, Meisterschülerin). Her work has been presented at Kunsthalle Düsseldorf, Julia Stoschek Foundation, Langen Foundation, and the Parliament of NRW.
